Have Courage and Be Kind (to yourself)
One of my favorite quotes from the Cinderella live action movie is “Have Courage and be kind.”
Ella’s mother was referring to how to treat other people, especially in light of how they treat you. This was a lesson that Ella was forced to face with her stepmother and stepsisters.
But sometimes it takes courage to be kind to ourselves. We’re endlessly comparing our looks, our bodies, our success to those around us. Sometimes it can be beneficial, if it provides you with the drive to succeed.
Other times it’s self-defeating. Pointless.
My teenage daughter—who is pretty and funny and smart—bemoans that she’s nothing like the Kardashians. And she’s right. My daughter is a natural beauty. She hasn’t resorted to plastic surgery to alter her looks. She doesn’t spend a fortune on her appearance. Her future success isn’t tied to if she’s beautiful or not.
That is a lesson I’m working hard at teaching her—the Kardashians be darned.
“Work on being in love with the person in the mirror who has been through so much and is still standing.”—Unknown
Do you love the person in the mirror…or is that something your goal for 2020?
